Quality of musicianship (including timing / tuning) and ensemble playing

Very strong drumming and general approach to rhythmic playing. Good vocal performance from Leigh – occasionally loses the tuning a bit although this is almost certainly down to nerves. Effective piano playing, solid tightness in the band – clear evidence of strong rehearsal regime. All members display very good individual skills but this has been drilled into something even more impressive as a group.
Every now and then the ambition in the arrangements leads to some difficulty however it should be noted that the group have striven for real interest and creativity in the performance and this is to be greatly admired.

Quality of song material

First song a very strong choice. Some good structures and dynamics in the writing. Some of the songs suffer from being a little long – this is an outgrowth of an entirely laudable desire to push the envelope a bit in terms of ambition and scope. However a wee bit more balance needed there. Some of the songs are rendered even better by very creative arrangements – Corey, Leika and Toni all contribute imaginative music ideas that clearly lift the songs.
Song 5 really outstanding.

Quality of performance / technical presentation

Excellent musicianship from all. Sean is an excellent drummer and has improved week on week both in terms of his drumming and in terms of rehearsal practice. ALL musicians display a connection with the music. This is clear to the audience.
Leigh makes very strong attempts to connect with the audience. This is never easy in this context but she persists and has some very good )and funny) moments.
Some very accomplished use of effects (Toni)
Clear communication between the band members – a simple but very crucial element of live performance.

Emotive audience response

Very good. Audience responded strongly.

Other Comments

In some ways this was a textbook example of the ‘Live Performance’ module experience. From reasonably humble beginnings the band made huge efforts to make the very best of the individual parts. There were very strong examples of positive compromise (Corey’s decision to stick with bass), dedication to songwriting (Leigh always appeared to be working on lyrics in rehearsal), good rehearsal practice (often driven by Sean) and general support for each other. Attendance was also very good in this group – they made the most of the opportunities presented.
